It seems like the thing to do on the last day of the year is to come up with a list of highlights and favorites of 2008.  I find my brain a bit dusty and can hardly remember what happened yesterday let alone 10 or 11 months ago, but here goes…..

Highlight of the year:  That’s easy –   O-BA-MA!  The painfully long campaigning was all worth it for the moment the new first family took the stage in Chicago’s Grant Park.  I still get goose bumps just thinking about it.

Favorite drink: Cherry Pomegranate Crystal Light with Immunity Boost.  It’s a scary red color that stains my kitchen counter if I spill it, but soooo worth it.

Favorite snack:  Trader Joe’s vanilla mini-meringues.  One calorie each and impossible to stop eating.  Interventions may be necessary.

Favorite book -fiction:  The Art of Racing in the Rain.  Kudos to my mom for recommending this one.

Favorite book – non-fiction:  Bumping Into Geniuses by Danny Goldberg.   A view from inside the music biz like no other.

Album of the year:  Kid Rock – Rock N Roll Jesus.  Cousin Lori was right.  This guy is a real rock star.  It just took a while for me to get it.

Song of the year: “So What” – by Pink.  OK, really Nash’s favorite but when you hear a song 700 times it kinda grows on you.

Favorite TV shows:  The Office, 30 Rock, Weeds, Damages, Dirty Sexy Money, Californication,  True Blood, Gossip Girl…. (sadly, I could go on).

Favorite Place:  The Library.   I know, so obvious, right?  But seriously, it’s like Amazon, Netflix and iTunes for free!  I feel like I’m in a secret club that only a handful of people know about.  Today we checked out 4 books about tornadoes and a stack each of Charlie Brown movies and Charles Shultz books.  All phases that will last approximately 2 weeks.  Perfection.  And did I mention the free part?

Favorite Download:  iPhone Apps.  From Shazam to More cowbell, I love them all!  And they’re perfect for Nash when stuck in a waiting room or in traffic.  Nothing like popping bubbles or shaking a Target snow globe to pass the time.

Favorite local team:  Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics!

Favorite Website:  Cake Wrecks.  This one is worth reading from beginning to end then bookmarking and checking daily.  Cracks.  Me.  Up.

Favorite Movie:   Sex & The City.   This is the only movie besides Wall E, Speed Racer and Tale of Despereaux  that I can even remember seeing in a theatre this year.  Plus I saw it with Ms. Picket and there were cocktails and girly talk after so, duh.

Happy New Year to all!!!

Nash had a friend over yesterday and  his pal  made a list of things they needed to do:

Being Crazy.  Check

Doing Violent and crazy thing. Check

Destroying things.  Check

Running over people with cars.  Check.

Mission accomplished!

Please note that all Nash wanted to do was play Bingo.   But the crazy violent friend would have none of that…..

It was one year ago that I started this whole blog thing.  181 posts and nearly 20,000 visitors later  (Seriously.  But most of those were courtesy of Jonas Brothers fans from all over the world.   Long story…) and I’m still here and digging this whole thing.  I much prefer this little corner of the internet over Facebook or  Twitter.  Perhaps because it’s all mine and the only visitors (besides said Jonas Brothers fans) here are people I genuinely dig and like to virtually “hang out” with.  It’s impossible to have all those lunch or coffee dates or the highly coveted girls night out, so pals old and new check in and if I’m lucky you leave a comment and that always makes me smile.   Plus I love having a place to get things off my chest and vent about everything from people who don’t cut that “X” off the vent of their new coat to how much I hate voice activated customer service.  So thanks for reading.   Really.  It makes this whole thing a little less pointless and a lot more fun.

Another exciting post by Nash’s mom…. December 22, 2008

OK, not really.  It’s just that I FINALLY got my Christmas cards sent and I even included the dreaded Christmas letter in some of the cards to those out of the immediate area.  And in that letter I tell them to check out my blog.  And then they get here and find this?   Vast apologies, newbies.  I promise every once in a while there will be something funny or cute and it won’t all be bloody knees and ranting.  Well, there will actually always be ranting.    But for now I’m just far too busy wrapping, baking, shopping, decorating and shoveling to even think straight.  Not to mention I haven’t had a decent night of sleep since Mr. Martini came into our lives.  He literally dances on my head at night and eats my hair.   Last night it was a mean game of Dixie Cup hockey at 3:30 AM.  And this is what he does all day long in preparation for a long night of shenanigans:

But he also cuddles with Nash and there is this wicked cute mutual love that is so precious.   I’m glad they are going to have twelve days to spend together.  Wait, TWELVE?!  I’ve only arranged four play dates!   What the hell am I going to do with a six year old  for twelve days??  Santa better be bringing him some new games….and  for the love of god, no more 3-D puzzles!

I kid, I kid. I can’t wait to hang out with this little man.  Check out his new school pics.  Adorable, right?

So happy holidays to all, and to all a good kitten-free night!

A Christmas tune for you…. December 17, 2008

I believe this is courtesy of Bart Simpson.

All I wanted was fruit basket December 16, 2008

Back in the old days, around this time of year you keep one eye out for the mailroom guy at all times. If he’s got a box in his hands, you keep your fingers crossed that it’s for you and it’s something good. Back in the day, holiday gifts were a plenty and all the record labels tried to come up with the coolest gift. There were clocks, blankets, bathrobes, chocolates, fruit baskets, wine, calendars and even snowglobes (or at least attempted snow globes – not a good mix with the freezing cold winter weather, right Ms. Picket?).  Then I entered the ad world where fruit baskets and gift cards (score!) were the big craze.  Once there was even an ipod (super score!).  But things have been tapering off over the past few years and now it’s all e-cards and “we made a donation in your name”.  So far this year I’ve fed some hungry children, planted a tree and given a heifer.  I know I’m being greedy (really, I do) but can’t a girl get a fruit basket?

It’s a boy! December 14, 2008

I thought we were done.   Really.   Sure we talked about adding to the family and even discussed adoption but our family is pretty great as is so why mess with perfection?   Right?  I mean, who really needs another mouth to feed during a recession?  More toys, more messes…. who need it?  Well, apparently we did.  I am proud to announce that during a momentary lapse in judgement, we have….

 —  wait for it —

….adopted a kitten!!  We’ve been casually browsing over the past few weeks and visiting our favorite local shelter from time to time, but we hadn’t spotted “the one”.  But last night we visited and kinda fell in love.    He is approximately 4 months old and was abandoned along with his mom, brother and sister in a plastic tub outside the shelter.  We’ll pretend they were wrapped in nice fleece blankets feasting on lobster and were only outside for a  minute or two…. His brother and sister were both adopted earlier in the day and Nash couldn’t bear the thought of him having to spend the night there alone so  – cue the tears –  mom and dad caved.  The next thing I knew, we were driving home with said kitten.

Vegas (our old, plus-size, deaf cat) is not super thrilled with sharing her turf and there’s been some hissing, but we’re sure they’ll be cuddling together by Christmas.   Hopefully.

Now the name game has begun.  We’re all having a hard time accepting the fact that he’s a he and not a she because he’s just so cute and cuddly and normally that’s a SHE not HE trait.  So last night it was Mr. Cat.  Then Spaghetti Cat (inspired from watching The Soup).   This morning Nash came up with “Bobby” (after his favorite NASCAR driver, Bobby Labonte) but Jeff and I are voting for  King Moonracer (the ruler of the land of misfit toys from Rudolph).   We’ve given ourselves until Christmas to decide and need to spend some time getting to know him before we come up with anything official.   That should be enough time for his personality to come out and figure out which name will fit.

What do you think??
